Gossip: Zidane to sign Rodriguez and three more for Man United

Well now, this does seem a little bit naughty. The Sunday Mirror’s John Richardson has an exclusive, and that exclusive is a list of players Zinedine Zidane wants to sign if he gets the Manchester United job.

Now you might think this is a little bit previous, given that Manchester United currently have a manager, and that manager is not Zidane. But Richardson tells us Zidane has been compiling a shortlist of players he wants to sign if he gets the gig. This is like when you’d be sat in boring lessons at school working on a list of transfer targets for your Championship Manager 01/02 save. Yes of course Daniel Tjernstrom was on it.

Anyway, the players on Zidane’s apparent list are Toni Kroos, Thiago Alcantara, James Rodriguez and Edinson Cavani. So that’s players currently aged 27, 27, 28 and 31, who Zidane wouldn’t be able to sign until next summer and would cost a sh*t tonne of cash. Good luck with that.

Anyone else think this is just a list of star players Manchester United have previously been linked with?

Off to Italy now, and Corriere dello Sport’s claim that Milan want to sign Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea.

This one makes absolutely perfect sense. Milan like buying star players, Fabregas is out of favour at Chelsea and is now 31 and his style would surely fit perfectly in Serie A.

Add in the fact that Fabregas is out of contract next summer, and there isn’t an obvious roadblock to the move. Having read the story three times, we’d now be more surprised if it doesn’t happen.

Liverpool now have close to an ideal Jurgen Klopp, full of experience blended with hungry young players who are happy to run and press until the sun sets. The key now is to keep every player happy and motivated, and that partly comes in the awarding of new contracts and pay rises.

An exclusive from Mike McGrath in the Sun on Sunday claims that Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are in line for new deals worth £50,000 and £60,000 a week respectively.

Alexandr-Arnold is already on £40,000 a week having signed a bumper deal at Anfield having broke into the team, but Liverpool now want to extend that contract by a further two years.

Gomez is still on the contract he signed when he arrived at the club, but having established himself in the first team again after serious injury, Klopp wants to reward the central defender.

West Brom and Nottingham Forest hope to sign former Crystal Palace forward Bakary Sako… Eddie Howe is set to sign a new contract with Bournemouth… Aston Villa are ready to offer a deal to Robert Huth… Luke Shaw will be offered a new £130,000-a-week contract at Manchester United… Manchester United could find themselves priced out of a move for Lucas Hernandez.
