According to reports, Mason Greenwood has been ‘rejected’ by Atalanta and Man Utd are “not now proactively exploring loan options” for the attacker.

Earlier this year, Greenwood was facing charges relating to attempted rape and assault. But in February, the case against him was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.

This decision was made after the CPS ruled that “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.

Man Utd have since started their own investigation into Greenwood but a final decision is yet to be made regarding his future at the football club.

Earlier this month, it was reported that an ‘agreement is in place’ for him to join Serie A outfit Atalanta on loan after he was initially linked with Juventus.

Man Utd are known to have been in talks with Atalanta in recent weeks as they are interested in signing the 20-year-old attacker, who is valued at €70m (£60m) this summer.

The Red Devils are keen on a swap deal involving Hojlund, but The Mirror are reporting that Atalanta have ‘rejected’ Greenwood as they are only interested in a ‘straight cash deal’ for their prized asset.

This has been backed up by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, who has stated that Atalanta have “played down the prospects of a move for Greenwood”.

“United have been looking at potential loan deals for Greenwood, and his name came up in discussions with Atalanta,” Whitwell said (via The Athletic).

“United are trying to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A side. But sources close to Atalanta have played down the prospects of a move for Greenwood. United are not now proactively exploring loan options.

“Greenwood has been training privately for several months with the full knowledge of United, in an effort to maintain fitness.”

Earlier this week, it was claimed by The Daily Mail that the addition of Hojlund would allow Man Utd to green light the exits of Greenwood and Anthony Martial.

Club legend Wayne Rooney reckons a move away from Man Utd would be “the best thing” for Greenwood.

“I think the best thing for Mason now is to get out of the club and go and develop somewhere else,” Rooney said in an interview with The Athletic.

“He needs to get back playing because it has been a long time.

“With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, it’s probably got to a place now where Mason just needs to go and play and to try and get his career back on track.
