Pep Guardiola says that Manchester City cannot afford to pay the biggest transfer fees.
Speaking after pulling out of a deal to sign Alexis Sanchez, Guardiola says that he cannot match the fees that Manchester United spent on Paul Pogba.
City’s current transfer record is the £55m spent on Kevin de Bruyne, although Aymeric Laporte could pip that.
Guardiola says that his club have told him that they cannot pay £80m for one player. That may come as a surprise to the Sunday Mirror, who link them with a £150 move for Eden Hazard.
“Maybe in the future it is going to happen but we did not pay one player more than £100million, £90million, £80million.
“We cannot pay. Why not? They told me we cannot. That is the truth.
“To be in four competitions, when we have recoveries and every three days we play, we need 20-22 top players. Today it is impossible to have that.”
