Haaland is a ‘little bit Lukaku-ish’ as pundit fears £51m does not suit Man City

Ex-Man United player Teddy Sherringham has suggested that new Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is a “little bit” like Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku.

Earlier this week, Man City confirmed that they have agreed a deal with Dortmund to sign Haaland for an initial fee of £51m.

The 21-year-old has netted 85 goals from his 88 appearances for the German side across all competitions.

It’s in the bag for Liverpool! Remember 2011/12 when Man City, erm, won

His release clause becomes active this summer so he was always likely to leave Dortmund ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Without him, Man City have scored five goals in back-to-back Premier League games. A win over West Ham on Sunday would all but seal the title.

Lukaku signed for Chelsea last summer for £97.5m. He has struggled for most of this season but he has scored three goals in his last two games.

Sherringham is “not sure” whether Haaland will fit in at Manchester City:

“I think it could be a little Lukaku-ish with Chelsea. I’m not sure….I mean, I’m sure he’s in safe hands. I love Pep Guardiola,” Sherringham told Stadium Astro.

“Haaland is more of a player when he breaks away and gets his legs going, striding beyond defenders.

“When you play for Man City, you’re camped in on the edge of their area so you’ve got to be able to feed balls into your centre-forwards and I’m not sure that’s one of his assets.”

Elsewhere, Micah Richards has suggested that Haaland is a “massive statement” signing as he is a “brilliant” talent:

“I am very excited. We talk about a young player, yes he is brilliant at we can do but they got him for £51 million. This is what people need to understand, he is probably worth £150 million in today’s market, especially with so many teams interested in him as well,” Richards told Sky Sports.

“For him to come to Manchester City, is a massive statement to say how well they are doing with their recruitment. The bigger teams in Europe would have paid his wages if they had paid the £51 million, so it is swings and roundabouts because they could have paid £150 million for him and paid him less money, but they have got him for £51 million.”
