Hargreaves lauds Richarlison

Owen Hargreaves heaped praise on Richarlison after the Tottenham Hotspur forward scored a brace in his Champions League debut on Wednesday evening.

Richarlison was one of Tottenham’s marquee signings during the summer transfer window. £60m was invested to bring him in from Everton.

The forward had been a key player for the Toffees and they arguably would have been relegated last term without Richarlison’s influence.

VAR is not the problem; football has disappeared too far up its own arse

The Brazil international has a challenge this season to play regularly as Tottenham are spoilt for choice when it comes to options in attack.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dejan Kulusevski all appear to be ahead of Richarlison in the pecking order.

But the newcomer was handed a start by Antonio Conte against Marseille on Wednesday in their first Champions League group game.

It was not the most entertaining of games but Spurs ran out 2-0 winners in the end.

Tottenham were helped by Chancel Mbemba being sent off following his challenge on Son shortly after the interval.

Richarlison displayed his prowess in the air in the final 15 minutes as he proved to be the matchwinner for Tottenham.

The 25-year-old scored two headers with Ivan Perisic and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg providing the crosses for the goals.

Former Man Utd and England midfielder Hargreaves praised Richarlison after the game, insisting that he is “exceptional in the air”:

“As a young boy, you dream of getting to this stage, playing in front of this crowd, this stadium,” Hargreaves told BT Sport after the game.

“He’s worked so hard. And to score two in your first Champions League game is pretty special. He’s exceptional in the air and we saw that tonight.”

Richarlison has gone back and forth with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher over social media quite frequently in recent years.

Carragher has acknowledged that he has a “funny relationship” with Richarlison but he thinks the forward’s “personality” will help him thrive at Tottenham Hotspur:

“Me and Richarlison have got a funny relationship,” Carragher said post-match during CBS’ coverage.

“Obviously, it’s a big rivalry Liverpool v Everton. And he’s a good player, no doubt.

“He’s a tendency to go to the ground quite a bit and pretend that he’s a little hurt than normal, so I have called that out in commentary. Fair play to him, he has called me out.

“He has had a real pop at me on social media. And you know what, I didn’t mind that. He has got personality. He’s got the character to actually force himself into that front three of Tottenham’s from last season shows, not just his quality, but his personality. And long may this conflict continue.”
