Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted ‘everything went wrong’ for his side as they were thumped 4-0 by Aston Villa.

Goals from Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz, Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings gave Steven Gerrard’s side the three points and ended Southampton’s impressive run of form.

The Big Match: the show that changed the face of football broadcasting

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Hasenhuttl admitted his side weren’t good enough at Villa Park.

“It was not enough today from our side. We had big problems with their two strikers and Coutinho – they were not easy to stop.

“We had problems at the back and we changed to five at the back and we still conceded two silly goals. Everything went wrong today. We thought we could play pretty football today and that simply isn’t enough in the Premier League.

“It was not an easy week because we had a tough game and they had a week off. It was harder for us to prepare for this game and we had problems with the shape. I tried to stay with it in the first half, but conceding the second goal just before half-time was decisive for us. We were better with five at the back.

“We have a chance against Newcastle on Thursday to show a different face and that’s what we’ll work on.”

The Austrian, speaking to Sky Sports, added: “We couldn’t compete today – we weren’t good enough in the duels. We had problems with the shape and it was too easy to concede goals today.

“It was the first time in a long time we haven’t scored a goal and we weren’t sharp enough today.

“It was tough after conceding a third goal and we had a few changes and it got a bit better but everything was wrong today.

“Today was not our best day. We haven’t lost for a long time, so it does not feel good, but I also didn’t think we’d win every game till the end of the season so it’s not the end of the world for us.

“We need to show good fight and good behaviour and we have to do better in the duels in our next game because Newcastle are also fighting.”
