Hit the road: Southgate omits Wilshere from England squad

Matt Stead

Jack Wilshere has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad.

Southgate submitted a 35-man preliminary list for his World Cup names on Monday, with the final 23-man selection to be announced on Wednesday.

But it has emerged that Wilshere is neither in the final World Cup squad, nor the standby list.

Wilshere was informed of the decision by a phone call from Southgate, with Manchester City utility man Fabian Delph one of those favoured instead.

Joe Hart will also not be in the final 23-man squad, while the Daily Mail report that Ryan Bertrand has also been left out.
