Rangers defender Connor Goldson says he wants to stay at Ibrox, with his contract due to expire next summer.

The 28-year-old joined the Glasgow club in 2018 after spending three years at Brighton.

He played a crucial part in the Gers’ infamous 55th league title win last term after they breezed past Celtic who were on the brink of a tenth consecutive title.

No Ronaldo, no Messi but there is hope for El Clasico

With his contract expiring in 2022, there has been a lot of speculation over his future at the Scottish champions.

However, Goldson has expressed his desire to stay in Glasgow – as long as it is the correct decision for his family.

When asked if Rangers was somewhere he wanted to stay, Goldson told BT Sport: “Yeah, it is.

“I’ve said this a lot of times before. But at the same time I want to see the club go to the next level.

“As I’ve said before, I want the club to win 56, 57 and 58.

“I don’t want to be remembered just for 55.

“It is a place I want to stay but it needs to be right for me and my family.

“We’ve got another baby coming, a little baby boy. So it needs to be right for everyone, it’s not just about me.

“Hopefully it can all get sorted sooner rather than later.”

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has admitted he is “not confident” about Goldson extending his contract, however.

“I can’t really go any further in terms of letting you know how much I want it to happen and how much I want him to stay,” Gerrard said.

“I’m not Connor, so I don’t know what he wants. I am not the club and I don’t do the bank balances and the numbers, so I can only tell both parties how much I want this to happen and then it is down to other people to try to find a solution.”

Gerrard is one of many managers to be linked with the Newcastle United job following the sacking of Steve Bruce.

Paulo Fonseca has emerged as the frontrunner, however, after he was linked with the Tottenham post in the summer.
