How Rashford really measures up to Ronaldo and Kane…

Gareth Southgate was keen to emphasise the development of Marcus Rashford following the England forward’s two goals during this week’s international break. The Three Lions boss compared Rashford’s career so far with that of Harry Kane and the progress of Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age.

Here, Football365 looks at how much football Kane and Ronaldo had played and what they achieved by the time they were the age Rashford is now – 20 years, 10 months, 14 days.

Southgate was correct to say that Kane, by Rashford’s age, “had hardly played anywhere near the matches for Spurs”. Kane had played 56 games on loan, but at the top level (top-flight leagues and European competition), Rashford has played 97 more matches than Kane had.

Rashford has played a similar number of top-level matches as Ronaldo had, and despite the concern over Rashford’s inability to nail down a first XI place under Jose Mourinho, the current and former Manchester United stars both have 45 Premier League starts each at the same age. It doesn’t seem to have done Ronaldo any harm…

Rashford has scored more goals than Ronaldo had, but the Portuguese icon was playing more as a conventional winger and he can claim to have more assists. Rashford is not far behind, though.

At international level, Kane was still nine months away from his international debut by the point Rashford was scoring his fifth goal on his 27th cap against Switzerland on Tuesday night. Ronaldo had played a similar number of games for Portugal, but the Juventus superstar had made more starts and directly contributed to 11 more goals than Rashford has managed in his international career so far.

Here the numbers and how Rashford measures up to Ronaldo and Kane…
