Hughes: No Vardy v Southampton is a ‘bonus’

Southampton boss Mark Hughes said Jamie Vardy’s suspension is a “bonus” for his team ahead of Leicester coming to St Mary’s on Saturday.

Leicester’s England forward was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Wolves defender Matt Doherty last weekend, so will serve a three-match ban.

Hughes is all too aware of what danger Vardy can present, but also warned his side to guard against Leicester’s other options – with Nigeria frontman Kelechi Iheanacho likely to be drafted in.

“You have always got to be mindful of the threat they have on the break, clearly a big part of that for them is Jamie Vardy. He won’t be available, so you would imagine that would be a bonus,” Hughes said at a press conference.

“But they have got another £20-odd-million striker to come in to replace him probably, so they have got good resources that they will use well I’m sure.”
