Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that he is out to prove that he can still “smash it” in the Premier League and he wants to “win” things this season.

The forward left the Red Devils in 2019 for a then world-record fee of £80m. He has had brilliant spells at Real Madrid and Juventus since then.

Ronaldo was linked with a move to Man City this summer before he secured his return to Man United.

Ronaldo and four other ‘new’ arrivals we can’t wait to see

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been speaking about his return to United in an interview that has been cited by The Telegraph. He said that he has not returned for a “vacation”:

“People think I am coming from the heart or blah blah blah but I am coming here to show that I am still capable to smash [it] and to do my best and show that,” Ronaldo said.

“I am here to win. People speak about the age but they should understand – and they know – that I am different than the rest of the people. I show off [that] year by year and this year will be the same. I know 100 per cent that I will do good with the boys, with my team mates.

“The supporters will be on our side. These supporters are special. I hope they can push the team when the team needs it and we will be here to give everything and try to win important things.

“This is why I am here. I am not here for a vacation. Before was good … but I am here to win again.

“I am capable, me and my team-mates. I am ready to go, I am ready to go. It is a good chance for me, for the supporters, for the club, to get one step ahead. I am ready and I think I will be a huge thing in the next three or four years.”

Ronaldo added that he feels “very emotional” about being back at Man United:

“I am so happy to be back. I came here when I was 18 and I never thought I would be back but I am so excited and proud and I am looking forward to starting in the best way and I am so happy. My family is happy here, so are my kids.

“It’s a good feeling to come here now because I know the people here are different. I know that since when I touched down in the airport in the first day I felt the people, their emotion and that was not just because I am a Manchester player.

“I’s because they saw me grow up here from 18 years old and my passion and everything so I feel very emotional and I feel the desire and I feel good energy.

“It’s all changed [from the first spell] but the mentality of this club has never changed, it is always to win and to make history and I am here to help the team make history and put Manchester where it deserves to be. I will give my best and I hope to enjoy the fans, that is the most important thing and I am looking forward to start on Saturday.”
