I tried to sign Chelsea star Kante twice – Wenger

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he tried to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante twice in the past and thinks the Frenchman is key to Antonio Conte’s title hopes.

Kante signed for the Blues in the summer from Premier League champions Leicester City after the 25-year-old help guide them to glory in the previous season.

Arsenal travel to Chelsea in the early kick-off on Saturday and Wenger believes it is “not a coincidence” that Conte’s side are top of the league with Kante in their team.

“I watched their game against Liverpool and N’Golo Kante had a huge impact,” said Wenger.

“It’s not a coincidence that they are in the position they are and Leicester were in the position they were in last year.

“[Diego] Costa and [Eden] Hazard have come back to very good form so they are very efficient when they go forward.

“And, as I just said, N’Golo Kante has had a huge impact.”

When asked whether he had tried to sign Kante previously, Wenger said: “Yes. When he was in France, when he was at Leicester.”

However, the Gunners boss would not divulge the information as to why he was unable to sign the midfielder.

“Again, I cannot explain to you absolutely everything, but it is quite obvious where he has gone,” added Wenger.

“Transfers are transfers, you cannot explain absolutely everything.”
