Ian Wright reckons new Man Utd signing Donny van de Beek would have been better off joining their Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 23-year-old midfielder arrived from Ajax for a fee rising to £40million at the start of the month and made an immediate impression by coming off the bench to score on his first appearance for Man Utd.

But Van de Beek will not look back on his debut fondly as Palace deservedly won 3-1 at Old Trafford last weekend, where Andros Townsend’s early goal was complemented by a second half Wilfried Zaha brace.

And Wright thinks a move to Arsenal could’ve been better for him with the huge competition for places in midfield at United.

“Donny van de Beek, he’s someone that I wish someone more like Arsenal could have taken,” Wright said on The Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“When you look at Pogba, what he’s doing, and you look at Bruno Fernandes – that is Donny van de Beek’s position.

“So people are thinking they’re going to see Van de Beek [sitting] with Pogba and Fernandes, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

“Because as much as he can play there, that’s not his preferred position to play.

“So again, spend the money, yeah he’s a great player and yes take him, but you’ve still got to look for the players that you know are going to improve your team.”
