Macclesfield responded and should have equalised just three minutes later when Martin Gritton tested Bees goalkeeper Ben Hamer with a 25-yard effort.
MacDonald should have grabbed his second of the game midway through the first half but saw his long-range effort go the wrong side of the right-hand post.
Simon Yeo could have brought the visitors level just before half-time but his strike was saved by Hamer.
