Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer walks across the pitch

Paul Ince has accused Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of “blatantly lying” to Donny van de Beek over his potential playing time this season.

Van de Beek moved to Old Trafford from Ajax for the start of the 2020/21 season but the Dutchman only made four Premier League starts.

With Fred and Scott McTominay starting consistently in midfield there was confusion as to why the 24-year-old wasn’t getting more of a run in the side.

Liverpool fan pleads for Man Utd return to former glory…

Van de Beek hinted in September that Solskjaer had promised him more of a chance in the side this campaign but that has yet to materialise.

The Netherlands international – who had the opportunity to leave for Everton in the summer – has made one appearance from the bench in the Premier League, while he has played 46 minutes in the Champions League and a full 90 in the League cup.

And former Man Utd midfielder Ince says he would’ve been “livid” with Solskjaer this season if he had been in Van de Beek’s shoes.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Ince said: “If I’m going to buy a player, a top player from Ajax, the first thing I’m going to say is, ‘Am I going to play? Where do you see me fitting in, within the system, within the team?’

“As a manager you have two choices – you can either tell the truth or not tell the truth.

“From what I’m seeing for the last year and a half, he’s not told Donny the truth, he hasn’t had any game time. He’s got £35million sitting on the bench.

“I can hold my hands up if I’m on the bench and the team are winning and playing well.

“You can’t tell me that Fred and [Scott] McTominay are playing well week in and week out, and even [Paul] Pogba because they’re not.

“But he seems to play them all the time, and I’m sitting there watching them play, I would be livid.”

Ince added: “He’s been professional, he’s done everything by the book.

“Ole’s come out saying he’s in my plans, obviously he’s just blatantly lying, he has to move in January for the good of his career.”
