Danny Ings is aiming to return for Liverpool before the end of the season despite suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury last week, according to reports.

Liverpool striker Ings was thought to be likely to miss around nine months after it was confirmed he was to undergo surgery on the cruciate ligament tear suffered in training last week.

Such a timeframe was sure to rule him out of the rest of the Premier League season for Liverpool, as well as any possible place at the European Championships with England next summer.

However, according to Neil Jones of the Liverpool Echo, the former Burnley man is targeting a swifter return and is hopeful of a comeback before the end of the season.

Initial fears over Ings’ injury have been allayed by the revelation that the forward suffered a ‘clean’ tear, which means the rest of the ligaments in the left knee were unaffected.

A clearer return date is sure to be discovered after surgery on the injury, which the 23-year-old will undergo on Tuesday, but with Ings already able to walk virtually untroubled by the knee, Jurgen Klopp could soon receive a timely boost to his injury-ravaged squad.
