Lee Martin is expected to shrug off a hamstring strain in time but Ivar Ingimarsson remains sidelined.
Midfielder Martin emerged from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Hull nursing the minor niggle but should be okay to start at Portman Road.
Centre-back Ingimarsson missed the encounter altogether having sustained a thigh injury in training early last week and he will again miss out against Saints.
Manager Paul Jewell has no other concerns to contend with, although he could be tempted to make changes after the weekend’s home reverse, with recent arrival Keith Andrews a prime contender to come into midfield for his full debut.
Centre-half Damien Delaney overcame an ankle problem to play 90 minutes against the Tigers and is again available to face a Southampton side who have won both of their Championship fixtures to date.
Richard Chaplow will be missing from the Southampton squad.
The midfielder was sent off 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute during the 1-0 win at Barnsley on Saturday and starts a three-match ban.
Danny Fox will be added to the squad after joining from Burnley last week. Fox was not considered for the Tykes clash but will challenge Dan Harding for the left-back spot at Portman Road.
Defender Radhi Jaidi (knee) and striker Lee Barnard (ankle) have yet to feature this season but are close to fitness and will be checked over.
Veteran frontman David Connolly should keep his place in attack after two goals in his first two games this term.
