Tottenham are leading Premier League rivals Man Utd in the race for Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, according to reports.

The Red Devils have been pursuing Jadon Sancho all summer but, with talks reaching an impasse, Man Utd have had to look at other targets.

Bale is one name who has emerged this week as a big-name target for United if they can’t get a deal for Sancho over the line this summer.

Reports in Spain on Monday claimed that Real Madrid are ‘confident’ that Man Utd will ‘make an offer’ for the former Tottenham man.

And now ESPN claims that Tottenham have ‘moved ahead of’ Man Utd in the battle to sign the Wales international.

The report adds that ‘efforts to negotiate a deal with Madrid and Bale have taken place, giving the north London club the edge over United’ as Ed Woodward and co. are distracted elsewhere.

‘United’s interest in Bale is serious’ but he is considered ‘a back-up option should a move for top target Sancho fail to succeed’ with ESPN continuing by saying that Bale ‘accepts his status as a safety net option in the event of Sancho staying at Dortmund’.

The ‘waiting game over Sancho has given Tottenham the advantage’ though with Bale knowing he can return to his former club if Man Utd don’t play ball.
