Carragher fires warning to Man Utd over January business

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United needed a squad overhaul in January but the fans will understand why they have failed to get the right players in.

The Red Devils brought in Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo in to strengthen the first team, while young goalkeeper Nathan Bishop signed from Southend.

And despite the big outlay on Fernandes, Carragher has warned the Man Utd board that they needed “big change”.

When asked on deadline day whether Man Utd fans will be happy with their transfer business, Carragher replied on Sky Sports: “No, I don’t think so.

“Manchester United need big change but it’s not easy to do that in January. The fans will understand it’s not been easy for them to bring players in.

“They would have wanted four or five players in but they’ll have to wait for the summer now. Certainly central midfielder has been a big area for Manchester United.

“Paul Pogba doesn’t look like he wants to be there and you have to question whether the other midfielders are good enough for a club like Manchester United.

“This guy [Bruno Fernandes] has come in for a big fee. We’ll see how good he’ll be. He’s obviously one for the next four or five years. It’s also a bonus when you get some in in January so they can acclimatize between now and the end of the season.

“Hopefully for Manchester United he can really hit the ground running at the start of next season.”
