Jesse Lingard’s potential move to West Ham is being held up over negotiations around the Man Utd winger’s wages, according to a report.

The England international is set to leave Old Trafford in January after seeing his game time reduced this season.

He’s made just three appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils in 2020/21 and has also been attracting interest from the likes of Sheffield United, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion.

A report on BBC Sport yesterday claimed that West Ham are ‘leading the race to sign’ Lingard and that a move ‘will be sanctioned’ by Man Utd.

However, because of the Premier League loan rules it would require the Hammers to sign either Craig Dawson or Said Benrahma permanently to allow Lingard to join on loan, with West Ham currently filling their quota of two domestic loan signings.

The Athletic agree that West Ham ‘head the pursuit’ of Lingard but they add more stumbling blocks to the potential deal.

It is understood that Man Utd ‘want a significant sum’ for Lingard to leave on a six-month loan deal, which is ‘being discussed’.

They clear up one issue, claiming that David Moyes is ‘poised to turn’ Benrahma’s loan into a permanent deal to make way for Lingard.

However, ‘discussions on a price for the loan as well as contributions to Lingard’s £100,000 per week wages are not expected to be concluded easily’.

With The Athletic adding that Man Utd ‘are conscious of being caught short in personnel should a COVID-19 outbreak occur and therefore want suitable recompense for letting Lingard out’.
