Joe Gomez claims Liverpool players have formed an even tighter bond than before lockdown as they have chosen to “stay connected by choice”.

Liverpool were leading the Premier League by 25 points before the coronavirus pandemic halted play in March with a return date yet to be finalised.

Premier League clubs will vote on proposals for a return to contact training on Wednesday, among those discussions could be a restart date.

The league was initially working on four weeks of training – including the small group sessions which began last week – before action could resume. Based on that, the prospect of action returning in week beginning June 8 or 15 looks feasible.

And Gomez has warned Liverpool’s Premier League rivals that they will return to action with an even closer squad.

Gomez told Liverpool’s official website: “Yeah, I think so, because we’ve had to have communication in a different way; it’s not been the standard come in and see each other by force every day.

“We’ve had to reach out as individuals and really stay connected by choice. That’s when you grow fonder of each other and closer because it’s been a tough time that we’ve come through together.

“It has been beneficial in that sense, that as a team we’ve been so connected and kept communication through the whole thing. I think having that time apart, to then come together again last week made it feel that much more special.”
