Joey Barton on the future and ‘Joey Barton MkII’

Matt Stead

On Tuesday Barton explained his reasons behind writing his autobiography ‘No Nonsense’, on Wednesday, he spoke of his first night in prison, and on Thursday, Joey was asked about Newcastle and his thoughts on how the club were run during his time there.

Now, in a final video exclusive of four, the Rangers midfielder discusses what the future holds for him, as well as the concept of ‘Joey Barton MKII’.

“I’m just me,” he says, talking to journalist Mike Calvin. “I’m in the process of improving, trying to improve, as I think everyone is or, if they’re not, everyone should be. I’m no different.

“Some people try and predict the future and show where we’re going to be, plotting out a map. That, for me, whilst it’s intriguing and you think, ‘this is what I want to do’, I’m also smart enough to realise that sometimes life comes along and alters those plans.”

For more from Barton, read his compelling autobiography, in which he writes:

‘Call me Joe for short. He is the product of a lot of research and reflection.

‘I am trying to make sense of why things have happened. Trying to look back, reflect, understand and hopefully make me a different father with a different set of skills, give my kids different tools because I don’t want that to happen.

‘All I’ve ever known is football. I watch as much football as anybody. I care about football as much as anybody.

‘And I might fail. I could dip my toes in the water and go “**** this”, like other ex-players have done.

‘But the pressure? If anything I believe I’m better suited to it than anybody else.’
