Brentford are reportedly “on the verge” of beating Liverpool and Burnley in the race for PSV Eindhoven starlet Johan Bakayoko.

Bakayoko impressed coming through the youth ranks with PSV, becoming a regular last term under Ruud van Nistelrooy, scoring five goals and providing five assists in 23 league appearances.

And the appointment of Peter Bosz over the summer seems to have elevated the 20-year-old’s game to another level, with a number of Premier League clubs interested in signing him.

The Belgian international starred in his side’s Champions League play-off against Rangers, assisting both goals in their 2-2 draw at Ibrox on August 22 before a stellar performance in a 5-1 win a week later.

Burnley have reportedly made Bakayoko their number-one target with the transfer deadline fast approaching.

Vincent Kompany’s side reportedly had a €20million (£17.1million) bid rejected by the Eredivisie side, who will face Arsenal in their Champions League group.

This was understandably deemed too low for PSV to accept, though there is a belief they are willing to sell for the right price.

With the Clarets very keen to bring the Belgian to the Premier League, they will have to be wary of potential interest from Liverpool.

Football Insider reported on Thursday that the Reds, Everton and Crystal Palace are all in the race with Burnley.

And now Brentford have came out of nowhere, with Fabrizio Romano claiming they are “on the verge” of completing the “huge” signing of Bakayoko.

Romano says the Bees are “closing in” on the signing after submitting a bid in the region of €40m (£34.2m) for the Belgian winger.

The Londoners will also include a sell-on clause as they try to iron out the “final details”.

Brentford are clearly very eager to sign a new winger. They made Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson their priority target at the start of the transfer window but were priced out of a move.

They recently turned their attention to Fiorentina winger Nicolas Gonzalez and probably would have been able to sign him if they made an offer earlier in the summer window.

Fiorentina are now reluctant to sell their Argentine star, which has seen the Bees bid for Bakayoko.
