Jose Mourinho has said he believes that England can win the Euros this summer and thinks their home advantage is “huge”.

England kick off their Euro 2020 campaign at Wembley on Sunday against Croatia and will be seeking revenge against the side that knocked them out of the World Cup semi-final back in 2018.

Mourinho, who had a close eye on many of the England squad as a Premier League manager, thinks that Gareth Southgate’s squad is strong enough to compete with the best.

The former Spurs boss told The Times that England’s squad is “friendly” and when asked about where he thought they could finish he said “winners”.

Mourinho said: “Winners. The feeling is that the group is friendly. They will accept being the first choice, second choice. When you are in the national team, if your job is to carry the water bottles, carry the water bottles and be happy to do it. They have a good group.”

The Portuguese manager spoke about the obstacles in The Three Lions way saying that the media and the country need to get behind the team rather than tearing them down if they are to succeed.

He said: “I think what they need is us. When I say us, I am putting myself on the side of the media and public opinion. They need us to leave them in peace. When I say to leave them in peace, I say to support until the last day.”

Mourinho worked closely with England captain Harry Kane during his stint as Tottenham manager and was gushing with praise for the striker when he said:

He is a very complete player. He went from a number nine — incredible goalscorer — to a complete player who is still the same goalscorer. He does more things for the team and still scores the same number of goals. It’s not like his qualities changed and now he plays a different role and he scores less goals. He plays a different role and he scores the same number of goals.”

The Euros start up this Friday with the final due to be taking place at Wembley on July 11th.

Wembley is also the venue for both semi-finals and Mourinho believes this could be important if England are to succeed.

He said: “The semi-finals and final being played in England can be a huge advantage.”
