Jose Mourinho has reacted to rumours that Tottenham are set to sign Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica.

Sky Sports claim that the Portuguese side ‘agreed deals’ with both Spurs and fellow Premier League side West Ham and that Fernandes has chosen the side managed by compatriot Mourinho.

Tottenham will reportedly have the option to sign the player for 65m euros (£56m) if they like what they see.

However, when pressed on the rumours Mourinho said he didn’t know if a deal was done for Fernandes.

Mourinho said: “I’m waiting for news…I don’t know if we’re getting [him]. He’s a Benfica player.

“We are not powerful enough to be competing in three competitions…the only player rested [for Boro] is Alderweireld. Apart from that, we’re at our limits.”

Japhet Tanganga made his Premier League debut for Tottenham over the weekend when he appeared in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Saturday.

There have been rumours that the youngster’s contract runs out in the summer but Mourinho insists that is not the case.

On the rumours, Mourinho added: “Do you think I would play him if his contract was expiring?”
