Jose Mourinho has agreed to let Spurs’ recruitment team pursue a deal for Gareth Bale despite doubts over the player, according to reports.

The 31-year-old swapped the north London club for the Spanish capital in 2013, winning four Champions Leagues during a medal-laden stint at the Bernabeu.

But Bale has found himself marginalised under Zinedine Zidane and a return to Spurs could be on the cards.

Talks are under way about a potential move back to the Premier League, with the Wales international keen to rejoin his former club.

A report on Tuesday in ESPN claimed that Tottenham have ‘moved ahead of’ Manchester United in the battle to sign the Wales international.

‘United’s interest in Bale is serious’ but he is considered ‘a back-up option should a move for top target Sancho fail to succeed’.

And a fresh report from ESPN on Wednesday claims that Mourinho ‘has sanctioned Tottenham’s attempt to re-sign’ Bale ‘despite being warned by former Real Madrid associates’ that he could struggle on his return to the Premier League.

Bale ‘now favours a return to’ Spurs over a move to Man Utd with the north London side able to offer him ‘certainty’ and the opportunity to play regular football.

Mourinho is now understood to be ‘fully supportive’ of the attempts to sign Bale with the Portuguese coach keen to add his ‘attacking quality’.

The former Real Madrid boss ‘has been urged to proceed with caution on Bale’ by his ‘former Real Madrid associates’.

However, Mourinho ‘believes that the player can be revitalised’ despite receiving ‘negative feedback’.
