Klopp’s right…but Leicester get more pens than Man Utd

Jurgen Klopp wasn’t a happy man after watching Liverpool lose at Southampton. The Reds boss was especially irked by a couple of penalty claims that were rejected by the on-field officials and the VAR.

“I hear now that Manchester United had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years.

“I’ve no idea if that’s my fault, or how that can happen.

“But it’s no excuse for the performance. We cannot change it, we have to respect the decisions.”

Has Klopp got a point? Well, his mole’s maths is correct.

In five-and-a-half years, Liverpool have earned a total of 30 penalties. In the past two-and-a-half seasons, Manchester United have been awarded 32 spot-kicks.

Among those 32 are 14 awarded last season, which is the highest number ever given to one club since the Premier League began. The fact, though, that each of those decisions was double-checked by VAR – in use for the first time in the Premier League – hardly screams ‘conspiracy’.

Maybe United would have had even more over the years had VAR been in use for longer?

And while Klopp is looking for tips, maybe he should be watching Leicester rather than United.

The wily Foxes have earned four more penalties than anyone else this season, and in the five-and-a-half years Klopp mentions, Leicester have been given 49 penalties, compared to United’s 42.
