Kane was a ‘massive figure’ but Postecoglou feels Tottenham are giving fans ‘hope and belief’

Following the 2-2 draw in the first competitive Tottenham game since Ange Postecoglou took over and Harry Kane left the club, the manager feels his side have given “hope and belief” to fans.

On the surface, Kane’s exit seems a massive loss for Spurs. In leaving for Bayern Munich, Kane takes with him 280 Tottenham goals, 213 of those in the Premier League. That will be hard to replicate.

It did not seem that the north London outfit found attacking, or even scoring, difficult, as they registered 18 shots and netted twice in a 2-2 draw with Brentford.

Postecoglou feels the performance showed promising signs of life after Kane.

“It is either an impediment to you or an opportunity. Harry Kane was a massive figure for this club for a long time and will continue to be whether he is in the building or not,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“We wanted to go out and give our supporters some hope and belief in the team. I thought they did that today.”

“Considering the events of the day I thought we handled ourselves pretty well. In terms of effort I couldn’t ask any more.”

One of those events was the head injury of goalscorer Cristian Romero, that forced Postecoglou to substitute him to ensure he did no damage to himself by remaining on the pitch.

“Romero had a head knock and the medical team were watching him the whole time,” Postecoglou said.

“Their information was that he wasn’t that steady and with his head after scoring, I’m not taking any risks in that scenario in this day and age and what we know of head injuries.”

In all, Postecoglou feels there are positive signs given it was his first competitive game in charge of the club, and more clinical performances will come.

“We had a lot of the ball and it was important we kept things ticking over. Our progression of the ball was really good, we just lacked a cutting edge. It is the stage we are at,” he added.

“We are trying to change the way the team plays and they are taking on a lot of information.”
