Harry Kane wants Tottenham to back Antonio Conte in the transfer market before signing a new contract at the club, according to reports.

Kane was heavily linked with the reigning champions Manchester City in the summer transfer window but Pep Guardiola’s side were priced out of the move and instead opted to sign Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

City haven’t looked back and are running away with their sixth Premier League title after not losing a league match since the end of October, while Spurs have floundered and have already switched managers.

Kane was pushing for a move away from north London in the summer after failing to win a trophy in his career at Tottenham – but The Sun now claim he could yet stay for an extended period of time.

The newspaper insists that Kane ‘wants assurances Antonio Conte will be backed in the transfer market before committing his future to Tottenham’.

Kane ‘is now happier and understood to be more open to the prospect of staying at his boyhood club’ and will make a decision at the end of the season over whether to stay or attempt to leave.

The 28-year-old is happy that Conte is now manager at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but ‘he will expect guarantees from chairman Daniel Levy that they do intend to bring in the quality new signings Conte wants before deciding on his own future’.

Kane will attempt to ‘engineer a move away’ from Tottenham again this summer if he believes they aren’t prepared to seriously back Conte.

The England international is looking back to his best under Conte and has credited the Italian with improving both his physical condition and the mindset around the club.

Conte has called the 28-year-old “world class” but wants to take him to a new level, the Spurs boss said recently: “Surely when you have a player like Harry, you have to try to involve him in your tactical idea of football.

“He’s an important player for us and he has to be a point of reference when we develop our football offensively.

“We’re trying to work with him in many aspects. I think every single player can improve until he decides to stop his career.

“We’re talking about a really good person who shows desire every day in training. He’s available for his team-mates and is always ready to speak about football, to improve and to see new tactical situations.

“I repeat: We’re talking about a world-class striker and I’m trying to help him to become also better and better. Me, my staff on the physical aspect are working – but not only with him, with all the team.

“To reduce the gap, it’s very important to improve every single player in many aspects.

“If this player is Kane we’re talking about a world-class striker, but it’s the same with (Dane) Scarlett. We have to improve every single player in this way to be more competitive as a team than before.”
