Keane destroys ‘overweight’ Manchester City star for ‘issue’

Roy Keane has accused Sergio Aguero of “piling on the pounds” during his recovery from injury.

Aguero was not named in the Manchester City squad that faced Liverpool on Sunday, with Gabriel Jesus impressing in his stead.

The 32-year-old has struggled with injury issues again this season, recovering from a knee issue only to suffer a hamstring problem soon after.

He has not completed more than 75 minutes of a game since March and is in the final months of his contract at City, with an eventual return to South America having long been planned.

Keane laid into the slipping physical standards of the forward, which might have contributed to some of his injury lay-off.

“My issue with Aguero when he came back was he looked overweight,” he told Sky Sports.

“God knows what size shorts he was wearing. He did look really heavy.

“Sometimes you can be out injured and hit the ground running. It’s difficult to get up to speed, but don’t be piling on the pounds.

“This idea that players need two or three months to get up to speed. I was worried when he came back he looked really, really heavy.”

Aguero attracted controversy last month after an incident involving assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis, with Guardiola defending him as “the nicest person”.

“Look for problems in other situations, not in this one,” he added, so Keane is essentially just obliging and Guardiola was asking for this in the first place.
