Keane slammed by pundit

Roy Keane has been slammed by a fellow pundit over his criticism of Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils paid around £80m to sign the Englishman from Leicester City in 2019.

Maguire performed well, to begin with, but he was among United’s poor performers during the 2021/22 campaign.

The defender played 30 times in the league as Man Utd finished sixth in the Premier League. They also exited each cup competition prematurely.

Keane has regularly slammed Maguire this season. Speaking last month, he suggested that United’s captain has “not been good enough”:

“It’s been a tough season, for the team and for Harry, he’s not played well enough,” Keane claimed (via Express).

“He used the word pride in his interview, we need to see more of that because I’ve said many times you’re going to lose football matches but the way United lost in matches this year they’ve not shown enough pride. Not just Liverpool, but Man City away, Watford away – loads of examples when they were not up to it.

“You’re trying to lead a group, and it doesn’t look like a great group. Is he playing for his future? He’s got to do better himself, if you want to be a decent captain you have to be at the top of your own game and hope the rest will follow. He’s not been good enough and the team haven’t been good enough.”

Gabriel Agbonlahor has now disputed these claims. He does not think that Maguire is deserving of this level of criticism:

“When pundits like Roy Keane who really come for players like Maguire a bit too personally for my liking,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“Then everyone feels that Roy Keane whatever he says is how it should be, then people have made their decision on Maguire because of what pundits like Roy Keane say.

“I think that he gets a lot of stick that he doesn’t deserve. For me he is Manchester United’s best defender.

“You look at Varane, very poor this season. Lindelof, very poor this season. As a country we should be getting behind our players not booing them, not trying to put them off their game.”
