Roy Keane admits Sadio Mane was “out of order” for ignoring his manager after Liverpool’s win over Manchester United, but sympathised with his reluctance to high five Jurgen Klopp.

Mane started on the bench for Liverpool’s 4-2 win over United at Old Trafford on Thursday.

It was a huge victory in the race for the top four, with a brace from Roberto Firmino and goals from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota taking Liverpool to within four points of fourth-placed Chelsea with a game in hand.

Should the Reds win their final three games of the season, they are almost certain to qualify for the Champions League next season.

But Mane was not happy at the end of the game, refusing Klopp’s outstretched hand as he headed for the tunnel having been left on the bench until the 74th minute.

Klopp insisted there wasn’t a problem between him and the forward after the game, explaining that a late change to the starting lineup contributed to Mane’s mood.

“No, no problem,” Klopp insisted. “Yesterday I made a late decision in training to decide for Diogo. The boys are used to me explaining things usually but there was actually no time for that and that’s all. It’s all fine.”

Keane admitted in the Sky Sports studio that Mane was “out of order” but also voiced his displeasure at the behaviour of Klopp – and most managers – after games – walking on the pitch and, in general, being too friendly. Classic.

“The player is out of order, but there’s a new trend among managers – going on the pitch, giving everyone high fives. When I was a player, I didn’t want the manager giving me high fives,” Keane said.

“If we’d won the league, maybe, but even then I’d be doubtful. If he sees the player’s upset, just back away. It’s bad enough your manager, but the opposition manager going round and giving everyone high fives.”

When Jamie Redknapp asked, “what about a Fergie cuddle?” Keane replied: “Absolutely not.”
