Kirkland steps up as Liverpool manager resigns

Neil Redfearn has resigned from his role as head coach of Liverpool Women, the FA Women’s Super League club have announced.

Former Leeds boss Redfearn, 53, only took over the job in June but the Reds have lost the first two matches of the new season, beaten 5-0 by Arsenal last weekend.

Chris Kirkland, the former Liverpool goalkeeper, is to take charge as caretaker boss.

Kirkland joined Liverpool Women’s backroom team as goalkeeping coach in the summer, and is to be supported in his caretaker role by assistant manager Vicky Jepson.

“The club would like to thank Neil for his work in rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2018-19 season and wish him the best of luck for the future,” a statement from Liverpool read.

“The focus of the coaching staff and players is now on Sunday’s Continental Tyres Cup fixture against Durham Women FC.”
