Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that centre-back Joel Matip has suffered a setback in his bid to recover from a knee injury.

The Cameroonian was believed to be close to a return to the side after a six-week absence, but has been sent for a further scan as he is still “not able to train”.

“This week we have kind of a reassessment scan where you have a look at how it improved,” Klopp told the media at his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Napoli.

“But there’s nothing you can really do a lot. You have to wait until the body is doing the job pretty much.

“And we will see that, then we’ll know more. He looks fine but is not able to play and not able to train at the moment.”

It has been suggested that the Napoli players may be distracted from the game as their players were fined by chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis for breaching club discipline, but Klopp dismissed suggestions that this will make Liverpool’s job any easier.

“If there’s one manager who doesn’t need any advice from anyone especially me it’s Carlo Ancelotti,” he added.

“The other things (around Napoli) won’t influence us and I don’t think they will influence Napoli either.

“I expect Napoli to be really strong for a number of reasons. Number one, they are a really good football team. And now they are not in Italy they feel maybe relief they can play in this game – we have to be ready for that.

“We expect them to be strong. Whatever has happened, I don’t have a real idea. But if I was a player, I’d be trying to bring the group together and fight the things from outside.”
