Jurgen Klopp has defended the world-record fee Liverpool are set to pay for Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk will join Liverpool on January 1 for £75million, in turn becoming the most expensive defender in history.

The fee has come in for criticism from most quarters, but the German sees things a different way.

“I don’t think it is a problem,” he said of the fee. “I am surprised about the development in the last two years.

“The last half a year has changed everything and we cannot change that.

“A lot of clubs cannot do that. If you want to sign a player, the last thing I think about is the price.

“I don’t throw money around but when you get the price, you have to accept it or not.

“It is a big change in football in recent years and we have to adapt.

“It isn’t nice but we have to adapt.”
