Jurgen Klopp has joked about persuading Philippe Coutinho to “never leave” Liverpool – by making him permanent captain.
Coutinho was the subject of three failed bids and one rejected transfer request in the summer, and Barcelona are expected to renew their interest in January.
But Liverpool remain firm in their insistence that the player will not be sold, and Klopp has joked about how the club might try and keep him.
“It was exactly how I said it. When Hendo and Milly aren’t playing, Coutinho is the longest-serving,” he said.
“Maybe I could be smarter and think if I give him the armband, he will never leave.
“That isn’t how it works but he did very well with it.
“You can feel the lift or the pressure and it didn’t affect him.
“It is a really good moment for him and he has played very well for the last few weeks.
“It is just an armband.”
