Jurgen Klopp has confirmed for the first time that Trent Alexander-Arnold missed pre-season with coronavirus.
Rumours were rife in August after the right-back missed the pre-season trip to Austria and then the Community Shield, and he then failed to produce his best form in the early part of the season before succumbing to a calf injury.
His replacement Neco Williams was excellent against Ajax on Tuesday night, making the only goal of the game for Curtis Jones.
“The season started after a really difficult summer with lockdown and nobody knew when we could go on again,” said Klopp. “We had a short pre-season and then all of a sudden, Trent is out with Covid, and he has to play early and he was not in the best shape in that moment. That can happen to all players.”
Klopp also revealed that he and Williams had a “long talk” after the German took him off at half-time of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.
They both agreed that the Welshman had failed to play to his potential in recent weeks, which had prompted Klopp to favour James Milner at right-back
