According to reports, Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella has emerged as Liverpool’s new ‘number one target’ ahead of this summer.

Liverpool have been linked with several midfielders over the past few months. This comes with them being expected to sign two or three new players in that area of the pitch this summer.

New additions are needed with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all set to move on when their contracts expire in June.

Jude Bellingham was considered Liverpool’s main target, but he is now primed to join Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Liverpool could not compete with Real Madrid financially, so the Premier League outfit have been forced to consider alternative targets.

Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister is one player they are being heavily linked with, but they are also understood to be admirers of Barella.

Last month, it was reported that Liverpool were prepared to make a ‘super offer’ to snatch him from Inter Milan.

The 26-year-old has shone for the Italian giants as they have reached the Champions League semi-finals. He has grabbed eight goals and nine assists in 46 appearances across all competitions this season.

Inter Milan are known to be in a tough position financially and they may need to sell some of their best players this summer to balance the books. Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez are also being targeted by Premier League clubs.

Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Barella is now ‘Liverpool’s number one target’ and Inter Milan are ‘seeking to make as much cash as possible’ this summer.

The Serie A giants ‘would be willing to sell’ Barella if they ‘receive an offer of around 60 million euros’ from a rival club.

This is a fee Liverpool ‘could be willing to pay’ given Barella’s quality, but he is also being targeted by Real Madrid and PSG. One of Jurgen Klopp’s main objectives is to land the Inter star and he has made an ‘express order’ to his board to make the transfer happen.

A separate report from Football Insider states Liverpool ‘are the frontrunners to sign Inter Milan midfielder Barella’. The report adds.

‘The Reds are planning to sign multiple midfielders this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to overhaul his squad, and the 26-year-old has emerged as a top target for the Merseyside club.

‘Barella’s contract with Inter runs until 2026, but the Italian giants are aware of his desire to leave and have placed a £61million price tag on a move.

‘Italian sources have claimed that Barella is set to leave Inter this summer to pursue a new footballing project and that the midfielder is on Liverpool’s radar.

‘It is now understood that Inter are preparing to let Barella go this summer and are planning to be without him for the 2023/24 campaign.’
