Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool “won’t make signings just to sign somebody”.

Klopp has come in for intense criticism this summer after adding just two youth players and a back-up keeper for minimal money.

Sepp van den Berg, Harvey Elliott and Adrian have joined the European champions in an otherwise low-key transfer window.

It has admittedly led to some hilarious transfer deadline day live blog action in some quarters, but Klopp said on Thursday that calls for Philippe Coutinho, Kylian Mbappe or others to join will go unheeded.

“We don’t make big comments on these things,” Klopp said after refusing to confirm whether Liverpool had been offered Coutinho at any stage.

“It’s the same answer that it is not very likely for us to do something.

“I think Everton are more busy.

“Our window was about checking options, thinking about it and making decisions.

“This is how we do it, always. If nothing happens then it was not the right option for us.

“We won’t make signings just to sign somebody, that’s it.”

Asked whether Liverpool will have a similar side to last season, Klopp replied: “Yes. Of course, we have the same team!”
