Jurgen Klopp has apologised to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson for playing him at number six for “one-and-a-half years”.

The England international has been brilliant in the last couple of matches playing in a much more advanced role under Klopp.

He came off the bench against Southampton to change the game in Liverpool’s favour with his intensity and forward runs, while he put in another great display as he returned to the starting line-up for the 2-0 win over Porto.

And Klopp has said “sorry” to Henderson for playing him in the wrong position.

The German said: “It would be cool if I could ask a player to please play these kind of passes, and we score immediately!”

“Hendo’s a brilliant player, I’m really happy that he can show that again. He likes the position obviously.

“It was my fault that for one-and-a-half years he played as a number six. Sorry for that!

“But we needed him there. It was a really good performance.”
