Jurgen Klopp admits “the centre-back situation” at Liverpool “isn’t too cool in this moment”.
Liverpool will look to get their season back on track after slight wobbles against Manchester City and Wolves when they face Brighton on Saturday.
They are facing the smallest of defensive crises, with Dejan Lovren joining Joe Gomez and Joel Matip on the sidelines.
Things are apparently so bad that they even asked Burnley to sign James Tarkowski on loan, even though they definitely didn’t do that.
But Klopp, while admitting the “situation isn’t too cool in this moment”, has pointed out that he has plenty of options – including the lovely Fabinho.
“Matip trained yesterday for the first time with the team but we will have to see,” he said on Friday. “We have to decide day by day how he’s doing.
“Hendo will train today, first time. Adam [Lallana] out, Dejan [Lovren] out, and Joe [Gomez], of course, out.
“If Fabinho has to play as a centre-half, he has played there before. What we want is the natural understanding of the game.
“If you are a holding six at centre-half, with the ball it’s easier, without the ball it’s different.
“We will work on that on the training pitch. But we try not to make it more complicated than it is.
“The centre-back situation isn’t too cool in this moment but in a couple of weeks it should look completely different.”
