Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will play in Roman Weidenfeller’s testimonial game in September, Borussia Dormund have confirmed.
Weidenfeller was Klopp’s number one at Dortmund during his successful spell as manager as they reached the Champions League final together in 2013, as well as winning two Bundesliga titles and the DFB Cup.
Over a 16-year period, Weidenfeller made 349 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund and announced his retirement at the end of last season.
Dortmund beat Liverpool 3-1 in a pre-season friendly recently in the USA and Klopp took part with Weidenfeller in a video announcing he would be playing in the testimonial match.
Klopp approaches his former player from behind before saying: “I’d love to play again.”
Weidenfeller replies: “I’ve got a great idea. Why don’t you come along to my farewell match on 7 September?”
Klopp then responds by saying: “Anyone who wants to see Klopp and Weidenfeller in action together will have to get a move on because we’re not the youngest anymore. It’s going to be a ‘grandios’ testimonial.”
Other confirmed names include Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings, Marcio Amoroso, Ewerthon, Dede, Sebastian Kehl, Sven and Lars Bender and Kevin Großkreuz.
