Klopp U-turn sees Liverpool steal transformative Caicedo after Chelsea transfer breaks the market

Jurgen Klopp once scoffed at the idea of spending £100m on one player but Liverpool wisely moving with the times has seen them gatecrash the title race.

Just when you thought the transfer window was becoming dull, it’s caught fire over the past 24 hours with Bayern Munich-bound Harry Kane and Liverpool hijacking Chelsea for Moises Caicedo creating all the buzz.

This summer’s market has been dominated by Liverpool’s midfield overhaul and Caicedo is set to follow Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to Anfield, with their summer spend about to exceed £200m.

Some will pick fault in Liverpool’s methods after they green-lighted the purchase of Caicedo, who is going to cost a similar fee to former long-term target Jude Bellingham.

Yet these transfers are not comparable. As this summer has progressed, Liverpool’s midfield requirements have altered significantly, with the arrivals of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai ending their need for a Bellingham-type player.

A spanner was thrown into the works with the exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League, with the latter’s departure making it an absolute priority for Liverpool to sign a new defensive midfielder before the window closes.

Liverpool got the Mac Allister and Szoboszlai deals over the line for roughly the same combined initial fee as what Real Madrid paid for Bellingham. And in reality, the England star boy was always a pipedream target for the Reds as he was never going to turn down the La Liga giants once their interest became serious.

In terms of the actual finances, £111m is obviously a huge outlay for Caicedo, but he will be on a lower salary than what Bellingham would have been on and Liverpool’s budget has been boosted by the £50m earned from selling Henderson and Fabinho, who were also among the club’s highest earners.

Liverpool’s supporters have grown angry with FSG in recent weeks as they dillydallied over the Romeo Lavia transfer, but their caution can be forgiven now they have beaten Chelsea to Caicedo.

The Ecuador international has emerged as one of the best young defensive midfielders in world football and his ability to drop in at right-back when necessary means he will only help to get more out of Trent Alexander-Arnold in his new inverted role.

There’s no doubt that Lavia is a top talent in his own right, but at this stage, Caicedo is far more established and while he’s double the price, he is a sure-fire superb signing who will fit right into this new-look Liverpool side.

Jurgen Klopp has previously been one of the biggest naysayers against huge money signings. In 2016, he expressed his concerns at splashing out £100m on a single player, following Manchester United’s British record capture of Paul Pogba

“If you bring one player in for £100million or whatever, and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney,” Klopp said.

“The day that this is football, I’m not in a job any more, because the game is about playing together. If I spend money, it is because I am trying to build a team, a real team.”

A lot can change in seven years and the transfer market has certainly altered massively in the seven years since.

During his reign, Liverpool have largely focused on relatively low-cost raids for up-and-coming talents who increase their market values during their time at Anfield.

And while Liverpool are behind some of their Big Six rivals in terms of financial might, if they are going to change their strategy and spend £100m on a single player, Caicedo is an astute choice.

Going back a few years, clubs would have been mocked if they spent nine figures on a defensive midfielder, but that all changed when Chelsea spent £105m to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

Todd Boehly’s consortium broke the market with that purchase and it gave West Ham United the confidence to insist on a similar fee for Declan Rice, which Arsenal were happy to pay to acquire their top target.

Liverpool spending over £100m on a player was not on many people’s bingo sheets for this summer’s window and while the Caicedo signing comes with an increased feeling of desperation, it is a necessary buy at the perfect time that keeps them right in the mix with Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

This transfer is proof that just one signing can change the overriding vibes at a club, and Caicedo to Liverpool is a transformative deal.

The F365 team have already made our pre-season predictions for the 2023/24 season and most of us had Liverpool just inside or outside the top four.

I’ve been more optimistic and predicted a third-place finish for the Reds but Caicedo’s arrival is a much-needed game-changer and I can now confidently predict that Klopp’s men will put in a sustained challenge for the title alongside Arsenal and City.

At the same time, it leaves Chelsea chasing their tails and seriously lacking in central midfield compared to their rivals at the top; they will surely now acquire Lavia as a cheaper alternative.

But Liverpool have been given a major boost heading into the Caicedo derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with the Ecuador international’s arrival showing that they mean business as Klopp looks to build *another* sensational Reds team.

They have had to change with the times to find a solution to a major problem position, with the new faces behind the scenes knowing what is needed to give Klopp the best chance of making Liverpool great again. And the manager himself has changed his tune and admitted that his 2016 self was wrong.

“Honestly, everything has changed. Do I like it? No. But did I realise I was wrong? Yes, definitely,” Klopp said on Friday. He will be happier than anyone to see Liverpool correct him.
