Klopp urged to rethink transfer strategy as glaring Liverpool weakness is identified
Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks that Liverpool should be looking to sign another midfielder this summer, despite Liverpool pulling out of the race to sign Romeo Lavia.
Following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, Jurgen Klopp is said to be content with his midfield options.
Despite Klopp seeming content with his options, Agbonlahor thinks that Liverpool should be looking to sign a defensive midfielder.
“I feel like Mac Allister is a good signing, and Szoboszlai will help the attack,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.
“But I think they still need more midfielders. There’s a real lack of energy in there at the moment. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have been great servants, but they need better options and more guaranteed starters.
“If you look at that midfield, there should be two new midfielders to come in and help Mac Allister. I’m sure Klopp agrees. In the forward positions, they’re fine.”
Fabinho didn’t have his best season last time around and Jordan Henderson isn’t getting any younger.
Agbonlahor thinks that Klopp should be on the lookout for a more energetic midfielder who can push them onto the next level.
“But in the midfield, they need at least two. Henderson and Fabinho have got the experience, but you only really want to be playing them in the odd Champions League or cup game at this point.
“If they really want to get back into the top four, they need to strengthen.”
While Liverpool seem content with their midfield options for the time being, they are focusing on adding to their defence.
The Reds have been linked with a number of defensive options as Klopp wants to add a young centre-half to his ranks.
Brighton are also keen on Colwill after the defender impressed while on loan last season. However, they have already seen a £30m bid rejected.
New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep Colwill around this season, although the defender wants some assurances over his game time.
