Former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt has labelled the Reds’ season a ‘failure’ after they finished as runners-up in the Champions League and Premier League.

The Reds fell short in the league as Manchester City won their second title in a row.

Despite winning the FA Cup earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp’s side will end the season with a whimper having lost in the final of the Champions League on Saturday.

They were also successful in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, meaning the German manager won both domestic trophies available to him in 2021/22.

With an unprecedented quadruple a possibility not long ago, Kuyt has slammed his former side’s season after an ‘indecisive’ showing in May.

“Liverpool’s season has failed,” the ex-Holland international said (via Liverpool Echo). “They played good football but you need to be decisive in May, and they weren’t.”

Klopp remains optimistic his side can bounce back and has already told the club’s fans to sort their accommodation in Istanbul for next year’s Champions League final.

He said: “I have the strong feeling we will come again. That is how it is because the boys are really competitive, we have an outstanding group together, we will have (one) again next year and then we go again.

“We have to try a bit more often than others, but no problem.

“Where is the final next year? Istanbul. Book the hotel!”

Klopp added: “In the dressing room, nobody feels (like it was) a great season at this moment, we will probably need a few minutes for that, maybe hours.

“In the end, the two decisions against us (in the season overall) were for the smallest margins possible, so that is it.

“We played a good game, not a perfect game, but that would not have been possible against the opponents how the set-up was.

“We had a lot of shots but not the clearest, only three or so where Courtois made top saves, then we concede a goal after a throw-in I think, and that is it.”
