Frank Lampard has paid tribute to David Luiz and Dele Alli while selecting them both in his Premier League team of the season.
The former England midfielder appeared as a pundit on Monday Night Football and was asked to select his best XI of the campaign so far.
Toteenham midfielder Alli has thoroughly impressed Lampard, who says the England star’s confidence bodes well for the national team.
“You can forgive Dele Alli a slow start to the season, but the way he has played since the turn of the year has been very impressive, said Lampard. “I love his confidence.
“The more we talk about the England team, when we went to World Cups, did we believe we could beat the best teams? I think Dele Alli is really confident in himself. He believes in his own ability and rightly so.
“Not many players come into a Premier League team and do that. That’s not the norm. That’s Wayne Rooney, that’s Michael Owen. The rest of us have to feel our way in. He is certainly ahead of the game.
Lampard was also full of praise for a former Chelsea team-mate.
“I think David Luiz has matured,” he said. “He was a very good player before – we won the Champions League with him and Gary Cahill as centre-halves in the final – but the criticism of him at that point could have been ‘he can make a mistake and does he try and over-play?’
“Since he’s been back, in a role in the middle of a back three, he has shown discipline and quality on the ball. His defensive stuff has been brilliant and I couldn’t leave him out.
