Lampard: ‘If you don’t perform, you lose games’
Frank Lampard was disappointed with Chelsea’s showing as they fell to a stoppage-time defeat against Wolves on Tuesday.
The Blues had the better of a very quiet opening 45 minutes at Molineux. Lampard’s men took control of the game in the 49th minute as Olivier Giroud’s shot squeezed in past Rui Patricio.
Wolves fought back though and they equalised via a fantastic solo goal by Daniel Podence with 20 minutes remaining.
Big Midweek: Liverpool v Spurs, Maddison, Arteta, Chelsea
The game was end to end for the final stretch. It looked like it was heading for a draw until Pedro Neto led a counter on Chelsea with seconds remaining.
The Portuguese international’s well-struck effort from the edge of the area went past Edouard Mendy and into the bottom corner to win the game.
This result signals a dip in form for Chelsea. Their 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Everton.
Tuesday night’s defeat to Wolves leaves them in fifth prior to the remaining midweek Premier League games.
Speaking with Amazon Prime Video post-match, as cited by BBC Sport, Lampard lamented his side’s performance after they were punished late-on by Wolves:
“I am very [disappointed]. We should see the game out at 1-0.
“If you’re not playing well, don’t allow counter-attacks and we did.
“Performance is what gives you results. We were playing very well [recently] and maybe the lads think ‘we’re playing well’. When you think you’re playing well, things like this happen.
“This is the Premier League. If you don’t perform you lose games.”
