Late Tottenham business making £40m defender exit difficult

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is likely to remain at the Premier League club beyond the English transfer deadline, according to reports.

Alderweireld’s notorious release clause expired on the July 26 and, The Telegraph reports, was the point at which Daniel Levy’s asking price rocketed up to £40m for the Belgian international.

Despite that clause, Alderweireld seems to expect to remain at Spurs when he spoke to Sport360 at the end of May he claimed that his “only focus is Spurs”.

On transfer deadline day, Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) bring us news that it will be very difficult for Roma to get a deal over the line for the Belgium international.

The report adds that the two club remains €6m or €7m apart on their valuation of Alderweireld and that it will be hard for Roma to negotiate a new bid before the end of the window.

That is because Tottenham have more important deals on their plate as they look to bring in the likes of Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and Paulo Dybala.

And without a replacement lined up, it remains unlikely that Spurs will do business after the English transfer window has shut.
