Leeds United are reportedly closing in on a deal for Brazilian winger Raphinha from Ligue 1 club Rennes.

Marcelo Bielsa wants to improve his squad further after a successful summer transfer window and start to the season.

New signings Helder Costa, Jack Harrison and Illan Meslier have all impressed as Leeds picked up seven points from their first four matches.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Whites want to improve their summer spending further by signing Raphinha for £15.2 million.

The deal could rise to over £20 million depending on the player’s performance and any add-ons.

It’s unclear at the moment whether Rennes are willing to let the player leave France, although they may be convinced to cash-in on him.

Rennes bought Raphinha for £15 million back in September 2019 from Sporting Lisbon.

During the 2019/20 campaign, Raphinha played 35 times in all competitions. He scored nine goals and assisted a further five, form which has now earned him interest from the Premier League.

Raphinha’s favoured position is on the right wing, meaning he could provide Helder Costa with competition for regular first team football.

However, Raphinha is versatile and can also play on the left flank if needed. This is another reason why Leeds officials are hoping to sign him.

If the Yorkshire side were to bring the Brazilian to the club, it would take their spending to over £90 million.

Their most recent signing was Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad for an £18 million fee. The Spanish defender will provide Liam Cooper and Robin Koch with backup at centre half.

After holding Man City to a 1-1 draw on Saturday with an impressive performance, Leeds will have high hopes for a win in their next game. They face Wolves on Monday 19th October at Elland Road.
