Arsenal in for Mykhaylo Mudryk

Ligue 1 outfit Nice are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhaylo Mudryk amid interest from Arsenal and Brentford.

Much has been said about Mudryk in recent weeks as he has been gaining more admirers across Europe.

This is understandable as the winger has been in great form for Shakhtar Donetsk at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 21-year-old was involved in three of the Ukrainian side’s four goals as they beat RB Leipzig in the Champions League group stages last month. He also got on the scoresheet in the draw against Celtic.

The Ukraine international has been linked with several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Brentford and Everton in recent weeks.

Ex-Gunners striker Kevin Campbell believes that Mudryk would be “devastating” for Arsenal:

“Look, Mudryk is a player everyone is looking at,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“He is performing in the Champions League against top teams. He is young and could develop with this Arsenal side. I think he would be devastating in that system.

“No disrespect to Martinelli because he has been fantastic this season. He looks the part now. But every top team has two players for every position.

“Smith Rowe is really a midfielder. I think he is a number eight who plays out wide sometimes.

“If you have two specialist wingers Smith Rowe has to concentrate on one position which is not a bad thing. That is what we want, two players for every spot.”

Mudryk himself has even fuelled talk of a potential move to Arsenal as he has admitted that he “can’t say no” to Mikel Arteta’s side:

“Shakhtar for me is my home. All my thoughts are only about Shakhtar,” Mudryk said last month.

“In winter we [will] see. I think every guy dreams about [playing in the] Premier League.

“Arsenal is a very good team. Very good coach. I like the way they play.

“From my side, I can’t say no [to Arsenal], but a transfer is not only my decision.”

But a fresh report from The Sun is suggesting that Nice are currently the team ‘leading the race’ to sign Mudryk.

They state that they are ‘willing to pay £25m plus extras’ for the midfielder. This will not be enough though as Shakhtar are understood to ‘want almost double’ this fee.

It is also said that Arsenal have ‘interest’ in Mudryk but the ‘main English club in the hunt’ are Brentford. Everton and Newcastle are also mentioned as potential destinations.

It is suggested that clubs will hope that Shakhtar Donetsk exit the Champions League at the group stages so the asking price can decrease. His contract is due to expire in 2026.

Arsenal were keen to sign a winger in the summer and they were linked with Wolves star Pedro Neto.

The Sun claim that Villarreal’s Alex Baena is being eyed up as an alternative’ to Mudryk.
